You may have seen or are aware of the accident at the JNU entrance on April 6th. The tragic accident, which killed three people, was caused by a malfunction in the braking system of a 4.5- ton truck. In the past, there has always been a concern that the 5·16, Sancheondan road is narrow and sloping, especially for large cargo trucks, and that this could lead to very dangerous situations. Spurred by the accident, Jeju prepared fundamental measures to improve the transportation system to prevent the recurrence of such accidents.

Jeju said it has come up with a wide range of measures throughout the island, concluding that the route of cargo vehicles and the road patterns are the causes of the accident. As one of the measures, restrictions of large cargo vehicles will be enforced on the 5·16 and 1100 road sections. When truck drivers from other regions, who are not familiar with the roads on Jeju, load goods from Seogwiposi and head to Jeju Port, they usually rely on navigation, and this guides them to use the shortest route, the 5·16 road and 1100 road. Furthermore, it has been pointed out from the past that this is very dangerous. In fact, even at the time of the accident, the truck was on its way to Jeju Port.

Jeju Island lowered the speed limit and installed cameras to prevent speeding and induce speed reduction, which is the major cause of traffic accidents. It is planned to drastically improve the road structure at the intersection of JNU, including the installation of deceleration lanes and separate right-turn lanes, etc. The provincial government and about ten other agencies plan to carry out the project by next year. Jeju Island is to establish a plan to improve the road by August after conducting a full survey by June.
