The Jeju World Natural Heritage Center created the ‘2021 World Natural Heritage Village, Embraces Picture Book’ from May. The goal of this project is to find the meaning of World Natural Heritage and the beauty of the generation. This project has been performed for 3 years, and for this year, Seongsan-ri was selected. The project consists of creating a picture book, a course of study, and sharing the results.

A painter and five writers are taking part in this project to help 12 elders depict the history of their life by drawing pictures for 14 weeks. They are working on publishing the ‘Language of Jeju picture book.’

‘Nature and Life and Me’ is going to be their theme for 16 students of grades 5 and 6 in Seongsan Elementary School. They are going to observe nature and draw about the beauty found for 15 weeks. A picture book writer, Kwon Yoon-Deok, is participating in this project too. This picture book will be published in November.

A course of study for residents and adults is planned to remind people of the meaning of World Heritage Village and lay the groundwork for the picture book. After these processes, an exhibition is going to be held not only in Jeju but also in Seoul including experience-based activities with picture book writers. The Jeju World Natural Heritage Center expects to have a meaningful time with the residents of Seongsan by creating a picture book about rediscovering the meaning of nature and village.
